Burleigh uses traditional processes and methods to make classic, timeless tableware from quality raw materials. A dedicated team of craftsmen and women work the clay in a labour intensive series of steps that has remained almost unchanged for over 170 years.
The creation of Burleigh tableware requires a number of manually intensive processes which each demand a high degree of expertise and experience. Burleigh is the last pottery to employ the transfer printing paper method of applying a pattern to the raw "biscuit" wares, a method once widely employed but now unique to Burleigh. The pattern is printed onto transfering paper by hand-engraved copper cylinders, which is then cut out as required and applied by hand to the various shapes and sizes of Burleighware. The paper is removed by washing, but the oil based ink remains on the wares and is then fired again to fuse the pattern to the piece. Finally the glaze is applied by a final firing after dipping by hand.
